In Brief – A climber fell to her death Sunday in Ulster County’s Shawangunk Mountains.

Lauren Sobel, of Brooklyn, was the lead climber in a trio attempting to scale a rock face at the Mohonk Mountain Preserve in Gardiner, according to state police.

The 25-year-old woman was about 70 feet up the palisade and was setting protection gear in the rocks when she reportedly lost her grip, falling 50 feet, according to police.

She was reported dead at the scene.

The publicly accessible Mohonk Preserve stretches across the north-western half of the Shawangunk Mountains and is maintained by a private non-profit land trust. It includes Millbrook Mountain and Bonticou Crag and is distinct from the lands of the Mohonk Mountain House and the state-owned Minnewaska Park Preserve.

State police and Mohonk Mountain Forest Rangers responded to the West Trapps Trailhead after the fall. The area is the most-climbed part of the Shawangunks, which itself is one of the most popular climbing spots east of the Mississippi River.
